FamilyWall is the most complete family app on this list: calendar, lists, tasks, messenger, location tracking, photo sharing, a budget and a meal planner, on iPhone, Android and the web. It has been going since 2011 and it works. Somiya is the opposite bet — a much smaller app that answers one question, what's next and who needs to do something about it, and deliberately refuses several of the modules FamilyWall is proud of.
So this isn't a feature race. FamilyWall wins a feature race. It's a question of whether more modules make your week calmer or louder.

Choose FamilyWall if…
- Anyone in your family uses Android. The big one, again. Somiya is iPhone-only today and FamilyWall covers everyone, including the grandparent on a five-year-old Android phone.
- You want the web app on a laptop during the working day.
- You actually want the modules. If knowing your teenager got to football, sharing photos with grandparents and planning the week's meals in one place is the point, FamilyWall does all of that and we do none of it.
- Your family is bigger than eight people, or you need several separate groups. One FamilyWall Premium subscription covers a whole circle with no member limit, across up to five circles. Somiya stops at 8 members in one family.
- You want a free option. FamilyWall's free tier is a working family organizer. Free and imperfect beats paid and unused.
- You want the long-established choice. Fifteen years of shipping counts for something real. We launched in July 2026.
Choose Somiya if…
- You've tried an all-in-one and bounced off it. This is the most common reason people arrive here: the app had everything, and opening it became one more thing to do. Somiya opens on what's next and stops there.
- You want a single EU data path. Not "we're a European company" — EU hosting on EU-owned infrastructure, encrypted on the server and on your phone, and no analytics SDK phoning anywhere.
- You don't want another chat. Your family already has one. See below for why we think adding a second is worse than neutral.
- Documents matter. Passports, visas, residence permits, insurance — with nudges at 90, 30 and 7 days before they expire. If you're an expat family, this is often the reason.
- You want to be able to leave. Export and delete everything from Settings → Account, without emailing anyone.
Why we don't build chat or location tracking
Not because they're hard. Because a family app is a bad place for both.
Chat. Messages inside an organizer become a record people rely on — and one that lives under whoever holds the account, not under both parents equally. Families in the middle of a separation have learned this the expensive way. Your family already has WhatsApp, iMessage or Signal, all of which are better at messaging than a calendar app will ever be, and none of which put a shared thread under one person's subscription.
Location. iOS already shows you where your family is, for free, without a third company in the middle. We'd rather not hold a live map of where your children are on our servers, and you should probably prefer that too.
Both of these are missing features. We're listing them as missing features. If you want them, that's a real reason to pick FamilyWall.
The data question, straight
FamilyWall is run by a French company, which is often where people stop reading — a European app, so European data. Its own privacy policy is more precise than that: personal information "may be stored and processed in the EEA, USA and any other country," and it names Google Analytics and Firebase as analytics providers. The App Store listing declares data collected for advertising and marketing purposes. Since 2024 the company has belonged to OurFamilyWizard, the US group that also bought Cozi — both apps now sit under the same parent, In Tandem.
None of that is a scandal. It's how most consumer apps are built, and if it doesn't bother you, it shouldn't. It's simply a different answer to the same question than ours: Somiya keeps family data on EU-owned infrastructure in the EU, with no analytics SDK in the app, and never uses it to train models. That's the product, not a footnote in it.
The price question, straight
FamilyWall Premium is about $45 a year and there's a working free tier underneath it. Somiya is €59.99 a year with no free tier at all. We cost more and give you fewer features — that's not a slip of the tongue, it's the trade.
And it's worth being precise about what "for the family" means on each side, because this is one where they beat us on the fine print. One FamilyWall Premium subscription covers everyone in your circle, however many people that is, and you can upgrade up to five circles on it — so an extended family, a co-parenting arrangement and a group of grandparents can all sit under one payment. Somiya is one subscription for the family too, but we cap it at 8 members, because we designed for a household rather than for a network. If your family is bigger than eight, we are simply the wrong shape.
What our difference buys is no advertising, no analytics, one EU data path, and an app that doesn't grow a new tab every six months. If price, breadth or family size are what you're optimising for, FamilyWall wins, and we'd rather you knew that here than after installing.
Moving over
Your calendar can come with you, and the route is the standard one. FamilyWall can generate an iCal link for a calendar (its support pages document this for Google Calendar, Outlook and Mac). Open that link in a browser over https:// and it saves as an .ics file; Somiya imports the file, shows you exactly what will land before anything changes, and gives you 30 minutes to undo the whole thing.
To be straight: the migration we walked step by step ourselves is the one out of Cozi, not this one. The mechanism is the same, and steps 2 and 3 of that walkthrough apply to any .ics file. Messages, photos and budgets don't come across — a calendar file carries a calendar and nothing else, and Somiya has no home for the other three anyway.
Lists are the exception, and not because of a file. Open your shopping list or your to-dos in FamilyWall, take a screenshot, and send the picture to Somiya's format-free import: it reads the items off the image, shows you all of them before anything is saved, and gives you the same 30-minute undo. Pasted text and any file you happen to have work the same way. It won't follow a link to a board, so send what's in the list rather than a URL to it.

Does every family member need to pay for FamilyWall Premium?
